South Indian Lunch / Fish curry meals

Fish curry meals for lunch....



Even though I indulge in cakes and pies my heart longs to have simple home cooked fish curry meals. Tangy, spicy and filling. If you have lived away from home more than a year u know what exactly I mean.  Come... let us have the simple feast!

Recipes courtesy : Sujitha easy cooking

1. Raw banana Podimas / Vazhakkai podimas
Raw banana/plantain - 1
Ginger - a small piece chopped
Garlic - 3 flakes chopped
Onion / Sabala -1 chopped
Green chili -1
 Coconut - 1/2 cup
 salt to taste
Tempering:
Urad dal - 1 tsp
Mustard seeds- 1/2 tsp
Jeera/ cumin seeds - 1 tsp
Red chili -1
Curry leaves - few

 Cut the banana into small pieces. Steam the it in a steamer / idli cooker or simply boil adding water just enough water to cook and dry off . Once cooked mash well with hand when heat is bearable. Need not throw the peel it is very good for the body.
Heat 2 -3 tsp of oil  add mustard when it crackles add urad dal when it starts to change color add jeera red chili and curry leaves. then add the garlic , ginger ,green chili and onion saute when it is almost cooked add the mashed banana saute two minutes then add coconut cook until
onion is cooked. Keep closed until served.


2. Parippu Thugayal: 
Toor dal - 1/2 cup
Channa dal - 1/ 4 cup
Garlic - 3 flakes
Tamarind - 1/2 a lemon size
Whole red chili -2
Black pepper- 1 tsp
Asafoetida - a pinch
Salt to taste
Heat 2 tsps of oil and add all the ingredients except tamarind and saute till the dals become golden  on a low flame. Sauteing may take upto 15 minutes.
When it cools grind to a coarse thick paste adding a tsp or 2 of water.

3. Masala Buttermilk:
Yogurt - 1 tbsp
Ginger - a small piece crushed
Green chili-1/2 of 1
Coriander leaves- 2 stands chopped
Curry leaves
Salt to taste
Water 2 cups
Mix all the spices and leaves together crush once with fingers then whisk the yogurt add water whisk again till it froths. Serve chilled.
